Lviv chamber orchestra "Academia". Wasyl Wytwycky. Chamber and string-orchestral music. | | Track Reviews (0) |

|
"This CD contains the recording of Wasyl Wytwycky's (1905-1999) chamber and string-orchestral compositions. Importantly, the appearance of this CD marks the definitive return to present-day Ukrainian national artistic consciousness of the formerly forgotten name of this eminent figure in Ukrainian musical culture. Wasyl Wytwycky's contributions as composer, scholar, writer, teacher and public intellectual was a significant factor in the cultural life of Halychyna between World War I and World War II. The Wytwycky's works recorded on this CD, First String Quartet, "Youth Suite", Trio for violin, cello and piano, and "Diptych" for strings, were all written in the interwar period and, by the composer's own estimation, are his best compositions. In addition to the historical fact that they were among the first chamber and string-orchestral compositions in the musical life of Halychyna, the aesthetic qualities displayed in them, such as the richness and originality of their melodic-harmonious forms, the splendid instrumental textures, a peculiar elegance, and the "European flavour" of the composer's mode of expression all distinguish the individuality of this music in the purely Ukrainian context. Analysts of Wytwycky's creative output have yet to define the role of this composer in the development of a national musical style within the aesthetic context of modernism. But even today, is it obvious that his role is commensurable with the contributions made by V. Barvinsky, N. Nyzhankivsky and M. Kolessa who along with Wytwycky created the phenomenon of Halychyna's musical distinctiveness." Olexander Koszarenko (information from the booklet to the CD)

Just incredible music – simple and wonderful at the same time.. And simple not because it does not contain delicate nuances, but because it succeeds, having rounded all sophistications of intellectual perception, to slightly open the door – right into the heart.. The multidimensional character of real Names – this is what you remember when listening to this disc.

"...there is a certain analogy with Bach's cycle "The Art of the Fugue"; in Bach's work the didactic idea and its application are primary. I could have called this cycle "The Art of the Melody", but in this name the didactic idea is missing and only the "art" is represented; thus "fleeting melodies" – the expanse, in which melodies exist on the boundary between their appearance and disappearance..."

...this disc even became the first (!) recording of sonatas by Myroslav Skoryk. Moreover: even the very music sheets of Sonata No.2 were not yet published at that moment. And Sonata No.1, by the way, is one of his diploma pieces in the domain of chamber music with which he in his time defended his degree after post-graduate studies in Moscow. Thus, this release can be justly referred to as really exclusive one..

Romuald Twardowski composes in 2006 "Kyivska" Liturgy – and dedicates it exactly to the chamber choir "Kyiv". Such honor and attention could not remain without an answer – consequently, as it could be expected, the choir became the performer of the Liturgy... This is, sure, a good record – transparently soft and strong at the same time.

...In the end, gratitude – is virtually the best thing that real, inspired creativity is able to bring to life. And in this case – it does bring it, because lights of the artist and the performers have met in harmony...

It seems to me that it is just impossible to pass by that rest, internal force and freedom that sound in his works. Confidently – but not boldly, nobly – but without boasting, posturing. Music by Sylvestrov practically always causes the feeling as though he stands in front of the face of eternity with his head uncovered but raised – and you, the listener, at these moments stand next to him...

It is quite enough to just listen attentively to any pieces by Stankovych, from chamber to symphonic ones – and there are no longer any doubts: this man enriched not a nation – but humanity – with his creativity. The feeling is absolutely clear – the spaces that live in music by Stankovych breathe real grandeur.

When the author perceives interpretation of his/her own works as an accomplished one – it does testify to something. And Valentyn Silvestrov referred to the interpretation by the ensemble "Kyiv Soloists" exactly in those terms. From now on, you also have the opportunity to listen to this concert, to hear, feel, perceive, penetrate into it...

His "Meditation" is a symphony for a violoncello and a chamber orchestra. Meditation in a general sense is a state, a process and quality at the same time. Since a symphony is called to reproduce and to recreate the first, the second and the third, it is hopeless to reproduce the content. This music...
