Kyiv Chamber Choir. Ukrainian Folk Songs. Volume 2.

I heard about this program of the chamber choir "Kyiv" for the first time about a year or two ago, on a train. By companion then was a student of a seminary school. We got engaged in a conversation, naturally on the theme of religion, and gradually the talk spread on spiritual music in general – and Ukrainian in particular. And then that young man told that recently he had visited a concert of the chamber choir "Kyiv" – and just with a program of Ukrainian folk songs. Briefly, he said that that was one of the best spiritual music concerts in his life. Yes, exactly spiritual music – although, it would seem, formally such definition does not match here. But that is only formally. Because by internal content, by force and beauty of performance this music could hardly be called otherwise but spiritual, in fact. At that, the specific agility, emotionality characteristic of our folk songs did not get lost either. But – it appeared in a somewhat new light. You listen to the both discs – and make sure once again that content is not determined by the form. The other way round, the form changes depending on what essence is embedded in it. And if one sings ordinary folk songs with high thoughts – they will sound elevated. One of bright proofs of that – just in front of you.
