"The prominent dramatist, actor, producer, one of founders of the Ukrainian professional theater, Ivan Karpovych Tobilevych (pseudonym – I.Karpenko-Kary, 1845-1907) is one of those glorious figures of the national culture that our people are proud of. Continuing traditions of T.Shevchenko, he played a great role in the struggle for realism, folk-orientedness, ideological content of the Ukrainian literature and dramatic art. During the twenty years of his creative activity, I.Karpenko-Kary wrote about two dozens of plays of various genres. Among them – domestic dramas from rural life, acutely satirical comedies, historic tragedies, etc. His plays testified to further development of the Ukrainian classic play writing.
