The recent survey has raised Gogol to the rank of the writer who is the closest to the Ukrainian soul. The virtuoso mastery of the author is picturing reality in magic interlacing with fantasy, fable based on folk narratives: fairy-tales, tall tales, beliefs. Gogol was a grandiose artist – he grasped the pivot of images, and, without copying reality, he molded them as artistic types. Before him, there was no example in our literature of that one's internal world were so strikingly exposed in the most ordinary human existence. "Fern Flower" is both read, and listened to easily – as a nice adventure book should be. Though you find here not only adventures, but also a romantic line – who could do without it? And mysticism tightly mixed with folklore – otherwise there would be no truth in it.
