There is no need to speak about actuality of works by Gogol – you only need to follow the events. Russians have recently shot a horror movie based on the "Viy" story – they, certainly, transformed a bit the external environment for the sake of greater horror, but the fact remains a fact. And Ukrainian cinema creators, presumably, have already begun shooting "Taras Bulba". And it is known for sure that one of the best known French people – Gerard Depardieu – claimed to star in the main role. And regardless of whether he will really take part there, all the same it is pleasant – and indicative. In fact, quite a lot of classics are now read only in classes – and nowhere beyond... But this is a different thing. Gogol is, in the end, the master of not just beautiful, artistic word – he created a number of bright, deep, very expressive characters. Thus, it refers both to long and short prose genres – and testifies to real, truthful feeling and knowledge of human psychology. It is a special talent, and not every writer can boast it. But, if he / she does have it – works by such writer will never get covered with a layer of dust. Because one of the few things that a person agrees to read about – and to read again and again – is about oneself. And that is why it is a great skill, not a simple thing to create a truthful mirror out of a text. Mykola Gogol managed to master this science, I think, in full.
