Ol'ha Kobyljans'ka. Zemlja. (mp3). (Earth)

Olga Kobylyanska is one of major female figures in classic Ukrainian literature – nobody denies this. And "Earth" is only one, though considerable, of the reasons of such state of affairs. I think that everything began when she was still writing in German. Or even earlier – when she began her self-education. Presumably, it is then that thoughts and ideas began appearing and taking various forms, which afterwards developed in the conscious position – researchers will call it the start of the feminist movement in Ukraine. So, taking into account the mode and mood of Ukrainian society of that time, I consider that any attempt of creative self-expression in the spheres "colonized" by men was already a feat. Regardless of to what extent this attempt was bright and talented – and already for only this courage Olga Kobylyanska deserves respect. But, certainly, if there were no talent – nobody would read her works today. But we do read them. Even though this is not an entertaining literature. It requires from the reader not just concentration – but real work. Requires so much that it is not always possible to read into the texts by Kobylyanska from the first time. But as soon as you read into them – the book does not let you free to the very end. And – it changes something inside you.
