1980 – CF in Dushanbe – the prize for Ivan Mykolaychuk for direction
Based on the novel by Vasiliy Zemlyak "Swan Covey". About the first steps of collectivization in a Ukrainian village.
Well, and we already wrote the following about this work (though in a different format):
...the "Swan Flock" is one of those works that were read later already. And first, in this case, there was the movie. The famous "Babylon XX" – the film full of transparent poetry and inexpressible questions. The producer’s work by Ivan Mykolaychuk, in which he also played one of key roles. However, in this film there are practically no second-rate characters – everybody on his/her place lives volumetrically, brightly, deeply. That story seems to be simple, there are no verbal patterns in it for the sake of embellishment – but in its unhurried flow there is place for everything. And somehow unnoticeably the world, first outlined with geography of one village – acquires features full of meaningfulness common to the whole mankind. This world, quiet and smiling, raises such unhurried questions that it is impossible to escape, as they are inside of absolutely each of us. This Babylon is not space, not history. This Babylon is the soul. But here are no reproaches – only the story, questions, smile, forgiveness. Life. It flies as a swan flock – and sings...
