Podil‘s‘kyy al‘bom. (Podillya Album)
As everything becomes clear about geographical location of the songs recorded here already from the title of this disc, we only have to specify a couple of details. Thematically, the album can be divided into two parts. The second part consists of lyrical songs. The first one – calendar ceremonial songs, among which there are Christmas carols, schedrivky, Easter songs, petrivchany. Plus – a few songs of the wedding ceremony. Podillya is famous for melodiousness rather than great complication of its songs – therefore, it is possible to hear here not only the space, but also to feel the opportunity of reproducing what has been heard (in contrast, for example, to a lot of Polissya songs). However, there are exceptions here as well. Moreover, pay attention that the collection represents authentic collectives of five villages of Vynnytsya region. Consequently, it is really possible to draw a more or less clear picture of the specificity of Podillya singing – and at that there is no confusion resulting from a plenty of ensembles. And, finally, far not all field records made during folklore expeditions can boast such high quality as is represented here – this it also noteworthy.

Folklore National Rite Ensemble "Rodoslav". P.1,2. (2CD).

The group is experienced and high-quality, it has been existing since 1991, it tours quite a lot – but the two-disc collection that you now see is the first official album by the ensemble. Well, this is the case when it is better late than never – because these musicians are worth knowing.

Ethnic Culture of Polissya. Traditional Music. (4CDs).

Rivne Polissya still preserves a significant number of archaic features in the material and spiritual culture and is characterized by conservatism and remainders of pre-Christian beliefs, ancient customs, world view and visions of the Ukrainian people. The folklore tradition of this region was formed in difficult historical condition...

Oj ljesom-ljesom. Traditional Music of Rivne Polissja. (Oj, through the Forest)

On the whole, the album, I think, can create quite an integral feeling about the culture of Polischuks – the more so that here, in addition to ceremonial and domestic songs, quite a bit of humorous refrains can be found. And it means that the impression will not be one-sided.

Na nashij julojci. Ukrainian ethnic music.

You can easily imagine wrinkles around eyes, work-weary hands and skin darkened of the sun. Simple, warm and dry music of singing – like wrinkles or work-weary hands. It is difficult to explain or to describe these voices, but for me they seem to shine. So quietly.

Polis'ki muzyky. Ukrainian ethnic music.

Three main categories of professional musicians are presented at this disc. Travelling singers – lyre players, and later – concertina players. Then shepherds – in old times they performed signal and magic music. And, at last, troyisti muzyky, who feel themselves well even in our time.

Vjenochok rut'vjanen'kyj. Ukrainian ethnic music.

V hetoj hati. Ukrainian ethnic music.

At this disc the songs from Beresteishchina are collected. Now it is the territory of Belarus, but the songs and melodies are ours. Our own. From these parts. Real.

Postop'janka z Podljashsha. Ukrainian ethnic music.

Pidlyashshya is a south-western region of Ukraine situated at the border, so naturally its culture is influenced by close neighbours – Belarus and Poland. In those parts along with usual songs you may also hear spiritual songs, Russian romances and songs, which once used to be Polish, but now have already become Ukrainian.
