Kobzari - wandering folk bards and court musicians. Churylo, the first kobzar whose name is documented in the chronicles of 1498, was a court musician of the Polish King Sigmund the First. The duma (pronounced dooma) represents the highest form of musical recitative, an unique phenomenon of Slavic folklore. The kobzar art, whose roots date back thousands of years to the Kyivan Rus is perhaps the most colorful, emotional and intricate facet of Ukrainian traditional culture.
