Fairy-tales written by Oscar Wilde are known to the whole world – and it is good for the world. Because there is a great number of various fairy-tales, long, rhymed, folk, magic, funny, instructive, exciting. But can you mention a lot of such tale-tellers as Wilde? Such whose fairy-tales contained so much love to people that they did not get afraid to include as well all of their vices in all of their real unattractiveness? I, for example, can think only about him and Andersen – above all things. It is even difficult to imagine how much warmth you need to contain not to step back in front of coldness of human vices – and not to condemn... And Wilde, it seems, told just like that. He saw, understood, wanted to help instead of condemning – and that is why he told as honestly, sincerely as possible, avoiding nothing, not hiding the glance, not closing his eyes. Actually, nothing clears so well as truth – if you have the force to look straight into its eyes. And these fairy-tales, in spite of all of their metaphors, are maximally truthful, and herein their force and beauty lie. It seems to me that the translation is successful. Actually, the original text is full, apart from everything else, of purely colloquial jokes, puns, etc. – it is therefore pleasant that the Ukrainian text is also distinguished for its succulence and colors.
