Based on facts, the author proves that the system of Soviet punitive labor camps was an unprecedented in scale and brutality instrument of exploitation, oppression and extermination by the Communist government of peoples of the Soviet Union. Anne Applebaum relies on already known published evidences and results of her own extensive research work in archives of the former Soviet Union.
