Yuri Andrukhovych, Karbido. Samohon. (special Ukrainian release). | | Track Reviews (1) |

Finally, we have it – approximately two years after release of the Polish variant, the Ukrainian release of the joint album by Yuri Andruhovych and the researchers into psycho-music from Karbido group saw the light of the day. A strange mixture of ethno-jazz, dub, avant-garde rock and ironically sarcastic melodic recitals – no, this list of ingredients, in actual fact, explains nothing. One should listen to it – and this, at least, should once be heard. Better – more than once. Musically, "Samogon" absolutely does not resemble the album "Songs by Mertvy Piven", with which it has a few texts in common – and this, in spite of all my love for the latter, is no doubt a plus for the former. Moreover, in the case when the text's author really wants to deliver it expressively – nobody would be able to put accents and pauses more to the point than him, and Andruhovych – wanted and did that. As a result, the texts acquired the bright third – after individual reading and their performance with Misko Barbara's voice – life, and some bitter smiles have become completely obvious only now. Such sort of social meditation without emotional anchors. But the most pleasant thing is to realize at some instant that the album is interesting indeed regardless whether you understand the words. Other mechanics already work here – that is a space of unexpected harmonies, some alchemy of intonations that distracts from linear advancement along the senses. Completely relaxed tension... What else does one need? "Samogon" is a talented work, and no more chatting. We recommend it. Anton Jozhik Leyba (Hedgehog)

Fortunately, sometimes you run across the albums about which it is very difficult to say anything – because you just frankly like them. Because, in spite of external simplicity, they contain so many ideas, various subtleties – one's ears just go astray..) Because the music tells you stories without words, while the words tell you stories full to the brims with music..

It would seem – just vocal and the piano. But this only verbally looks rather ascetic – in actual fact, a surprisingly powerful emotional current lives inside there. Actually, the way the voice and the piano sound – makes Hanna Brizhata, aka Anniebri, a truly unordinary phenomenon on our scene. Honestly speaking, I can hardly think about a single Ukrainian album resembling "Lo-Fi Feeling"...

In spite of that “At Night” compositions do not meet the pop-format, the album is aimed at mass audience. The name, voice and the specific, characteristic of only Svyatoslav Vakarchuk melodics of the compositions will help fans of Ukrainian music become acquainted with new music forms, to seize new music territories.

If we begin from the end, we could do it so: this is a wonderful, heartfelt, clear, high-quality album – and at present this is the best album in the reserve of Anno Domini. All previous experience, all best qualities acquired new depth here, started shining with new colors. And if we begin from the beginning...

As a rule the idea of heroic nature has never even crossed the minds of the heroic figures. Moreover they can even get frightened if one alludes to this. But still they continue doing their work. Just because it is their... It’s no use in objecting to the fact that real musicians, the same as the real music, begin with an ability to listen carefully. To listen and to hear.

"Made in YuA" is not just a dedication to UA, although it is here that Yury Andruhovych acted not only as the author of the lyrics, but also as a full-fledged participating performer. "Made in YuA" is poignant texts with the genetic spirals of subtexts, delicate – excuse my tautology – rock melodiousness with burlesque and grotesques masks, with the already branded atmosphere of transparent dusk..

...the album again suggests the idea that the war for independence of Ukraine that started dozens of years ago – lasts till now. And now even more than ever before it is opposition of identities – because external, political and geographic independence is worth nothing unless it is founded on internal freedom. To quote the song – "...to be oneself and to be proud".

...This time we can see appearance of something that, it seems, has never before happened in the space of modern Ukrainian music. It is difficult and even virtually impossible to call "Criminal Sonnets" a reaction to such phenomenon as modern Russian chanson (or simpler – the rogue song). It is not just more elevated, it is – even better – different. Refined and simple, grotesque and life-like at the same time...

Plach Yeremiji songs are usually serious, philosophic poems accompaniment by rock-group. Music in the songs sounds hard, then changes to a easy ballads and again explodes, overfilled by emotions. All this is a specific "Lviv's" colouring.

She decided not to squeeze her debut album in any harsh thematic or stylish frames. Actually, the name "Travelling by Crimea" testifies exactly to this – during the trip, it will be possible to meet various, absolutely differing compositions here. The main thing that unites them is the oriental intricacy in melodies and the southern passion in performance.

I could say something about the reflection of the musical universe here, as several musical trends and styles got skilfully and gently entangled in this album. Still it seems to me that it would not be groundless to speak about the reflection of the Universe itself, as it is a musical stream, which is characterised by generality.

Any concrete definition would seem too narrow here – even though such directions as new-age, fusion, jazz-rock imply a wide palette of sounds and technical tools. But here you will find all this – and something more, for what there are rather not names, but feeling.
