If it is already in your blood – you cannot escape from it... In 2004 Denys Dudko left the jazz laboratory Skhid-Side for the rock group Okean Elzy – and simultaneously replaced the contrabass with the bass guitar. But several years ago he suddenly in parallel took part in the project UpSide3 – they performed and even released the wonderful album "Octopus". Then – the project by Svyatoslav Vakarchuk "At Night" appeared, and Denys Dudko played far not the last role in creation of jazz arrangements for it. Thus, if this is in your blood... Therefore, presumably, no wonder that you see now the first album of a new jazz project by Denys Dudko – so, it was only the question of time. Nice. The nicer that "Sofia" is not something soft and sweet. Fresh improvisation music with the Slavonic flavor – bright and rather poignant music, which in no way fits for serving as just a background. It requires attentive listening, and it is just pleasant to listen to it attentively, to track the line of each instrument. Take only the parties by Fantanaev, which, actually, does not play "sheer" solos, but virtually all through the disc one feels his playing as an integral varied improvisation, free fantasy based on a topic – although groove does not suffer either as a result of that at all... And the winds section? Dennis Adu and Bogdan Gumenyuk almost weightlessly lead lyrical themes – and no less easily and convincingly offer sporadic emotional splashes, which make blood start boiling... Well, and so on, and thus on the whole the entire album is as if a well-aimed punch, a breath of cheerful air. And it leaves the impression – of great but surprisingly balanced energy. It was his last gig as a leader. As he said, he gave this concert while he felt hungry for jazz and real improvisation. And it was a very inspired, enthusiastic gig, which Shabaltas liked a lot, and wanted it to be released as a CD. All we can do is to make it happen after he's tragically gone...

Frankly speaking, none of the Umka.com.ua team was a fan of Hard Salsa – but, believe me, this in no way prevented us from enjoying what we heard. A very sunny, powerful work – and even an arrangement of the famous "Billie Jean" sounds completely organic here. However, it is not surprising...

I do not even know whether I should refer to Illya's music as complicated one. Objectively, presumably, yes – although, to my mind, its flow and development in every play is so natural, easy that the architecture just steps back to the background. Because in his hands the music matter stops being an abstract idea – it comes back to life..

..it seems that "My Day" is the first Ukrainian jazz album "spin" round the button accordion... Spin perfectly – Kostyantyn Strelchenko has proved to be a true master. This refers, sure, to the purely technical virtuosity as well – and it does impress. But one would like to separately emphasize another mastery, the internal one...

..two concerts took place on that evening in actual fact – and those performances were so different that almost no temptation even arises to compare them with each other. But another thing is always the main one: whether the musicians succeed in revealing themselves in music – and, thus, revealing the audience with the music. And here, presumably, there will be no objections: all of that – happened!

..it will not be an overstatement if we say that the debut album by Fantaev has been virtually the most expected jazz release 2008 in Ukraine. VSH-Ensemble can be considered a temporary concert project, a sort of a gamble. However, in view of the quality of the music material represented here, one would like to believe that activity of the project will not be ended thereon – in the end, as they say, it is temporary things that last the longest... At all events, it seems that "Acid Menu" has succeeded for one hundred percent.

Season 2007 was opened and closed with performances by, actually, Igor Zakus with Z-Band – and the both concerts have now become constituent parts of this series. At closing of the season, an absolutely new program sounded – "Kolomyiky". Well, and the program "Zakus Was Here" sounded during the opening, and it is it that you are going to hear here.

Listen how soft but bright the instrument sounds in his hands, how much of his sincere heart is given to it – you can hardly mix this handwriting with anything else. I am sure – even if only the bass by Igor Zakus sounded on the disc, it would be a rich, varied jazz album...

Считаю данный альбом одним из лучших своих приобретений ушедшего года. Все композиции - авторские! Хотя, мне показалось, что не везде удались джазовые интонации: временами слышалось звучание, как-бы, народного оркестра, временами - духового. Но, может так и было задумано... Понравилось торжественное, величавое звучание духовых в "Sofia", дуэт трубы и саксофона в "Feast & Hunting" + соло на фортепиано. Достаточно профессионально сыграно Деннисом Аду сложное по технике исполнения соло трубы в "Oh, These Games" (правда, в среднем регистре, но это, наверное, не значит что верхним регистром Деннис не владеет). А вообще-то, духовые явились в данном альбоме своего рода "тяжелой артиллерией",полноценным дуэтом, которому была отведена главная роль в реализации идеи альбома. И они с ней достойно справились. О Денисе Дудко можно сказать, что это уже сложившийся музыкант, умеющий к тому же сочинять музыку (то же самое можно сказать об Алексе Фантаеве). А вот Денниса Аду я считаю самым перспективным украинским джазовым музыкантом. Я помню его еще мальчиком, когда он играл в Криворожском детском биг-бенде и уже тогда исполнял короткие импровизированные сольные партии. Думаю, что со временем его имя станет известно и по другую сторону Атлантики.
Оформление альбома - неудовлетворительное (отсутствуют статья и фото). Издатели (и распространители) джазовой музыкальной продукции должны понять: статья и фотографии являются непременным атрибутом современного альбома! Цель фотографий: "страна должна знать своих героев"! Цель статьи: презентация музыкантов. Это если Вы хотите, чтобы джазовая музыка (а не попса и низкопробный "шансон") была достаточно востребованной.
И последнее. Не воспринимайте все здесь написанное мной слишком серьезно. Я всего-лишь любитель джаза.
