The ensemble of old church music "Sreteniye". Vecher na Ukrayne. | | Track Reviews (1) |
|
|
To begin with, I have to note two facts. The first fact is the following: this album is from Kharkiv, that’s why one may expect something interesting and pleasant from it. The second fact is the next: we have met with him for three times and each time it was really interesting. May be, you remember, for example, the album “Ancient Divine Byzantium, Georgian and Russian Singing” – personally I was impressed greatly and pleasantly. To tell the truth, this album differs a bit from the previous ones. The performers themselves call this programme “Stritennja” at Rest”. It is exactly because not spiritual songs make the basis of this album, but folk ones – not only Ukrainian, by the way, but also both Russian and Georgian. All in all, the album sounds not simply harmonious, but tender. It sounds the way a usual folk song sounds – it is a real spiritual song. Then, may be it is really like that?

As I have an acquaintance who works at the airport, I can confidently say: when flying away from Ukraine, people search for discs by exactly this Ukrainian collective, in fact, more frequently than any other ones. Whatever you might say, the National Choir named after G.Veryovka is a real, bright, original legend. Living.

...And thus with the first song one wants to raise the glass, and with the following – one want to forget about the glass forever. So, different songs sound here, for different moods. But I am sure that they would not be even half that convincing unless the force of performance – and some songs really fascinate, that is how they sing them.

You will hear – great hopes sing here. Besides, children's choruses have always raised genuine interest of the public. And, you know, not every "adult" ensemble is capable of presenting such high quality.

We have got used to speak about the spiritual music as the one which concerns the church joyous and Christian divine service. This time we have the example of the church music which is performed exclusively in the inner temple and has nothing to do with divine services.

Developing his own style and manner, Mykola Kolessa uses and combines the devices of symbolism, neoclassicism, postromanticism, neofolklorism and his personal original and keen vision.

The singing of Iveria Church differs subtly but still clearly from usual samples of Orthodox church singing. It is difficult to render their colouring in words. Yes, this is a divine service, but there is so much human force, inspiration, will, so much craving for life and ascent in it that I feel that inside of me the pride of being a human being arises

Along with this one, we present two more discs of this group – the singing of Ancient Russian and Iveria Churches, so you have the chance to compare. There is no strict aloofness of the former and mountain melody of the latter here, but still you will immediately feel zest of it. As Byzantine empire was rich, the same way this singing is rich..
