Paul, in 2000 when this CD was releases Unicode was a new, uncommon technique. At the same time there was an English version of this encyclopaedia. This is probably the second reason why this CD was not properly designed to be used on English OS.
Finally, if you change regional setting on your Windows to Cyrillic, you will be able to use it. I have English version of Windows on my laptop. I have no problem using this disc.

WARNING - DO NOT BUY THIS CD!
Beware all people outside of Ukraine - who use a Latin-based version of Windows operating system. This computer CD has been programmed by people who do not know what they are doing!!
It can only be viewed on a cyrillic-based Windows system (eg. Ukrainian or Russian). Any other system (ie. the rest of the world) cannont veiw this CD, as the idiot programmers did not bother to consider the use of Unicode - a system available on ALL windows operating systems since Windows2000.
I was bitterly disappointed, as I use a lot of Ukrainian material on my computer, which easily handles any text written in Unicode (eg. UTF-8) which means that any document or program, whether it is writtern in cyrillic, latin, or asian scripts, appears as it should on Any Windows-PC computer. This is the standard used world-wide, both on the internet and in documents and programs.
Unfortunately, this is an example of the narrow thinking of the Ukrainian programmers - they have effectively excluded all Ukrainians outside of Ukraine in using this disc.
Ths above advertisement should warn any people ouside of Ukraine, by stating that the requirements are for a cyrillic-based Windows system!!
