Hutsul magic. Authentic Hutsul Music from the Ukrainian Carpathians. | | Track Reviews (2) |
|
|
"The music in this compilation was recorded in 2007-2008 in the village of Shepit, located in the Kosiv district of the Ivano-Frankivsk area, Ukraine, an area of the Carpathian Mountains populated by a sub-ethnic group called the Hutsuls. Most of the tunes performed by Yura, Mykola and Mykhailo Danyschuk, professional wedding musicians, also known by their nickname, the Palahniuk brothers, and some of their children. Mykola, the oldest of the Palahniuk brothers, was the reason they became professional wedding musicians. Until the second half of the 20th century almost every Hutsul family owned some musical instruments, and almost every boy who tended the sheep in the mountains played a fiyarka, an open-ended flute with six fingerholes. When Mykola, born in 1944, became proficient on the fiyarka he was invited to play at weddings and dances with adult musicians. That gave him the chance to master on the tsymbaly (cimbalom) and the fiddle. Soon he encouraged his younger brothers to learn to play – he wanted to form his own wedding band. Thus, Yura became a virtuoso fiddler and a good fiyarka player while Mykhailo mastered the tsymbaly and became unbeatable on percussion. All performers on this CD are genuine folk musicians in the sense that everything they perform was learned by ear from the previous generations. The younger musicians are musically literate; nevertheless, every Hutsul melody they play was learned the traditional way." (the information is from the booklet to a compact disc)

The universe of authenticity is an inexhaustible treasure, and the one who will manage to approach it carefully and respectfully will receive a great number of real valuables instead. Actually, the two fresh discs released by Gennady are a convincing example of such correct, attentive attitude. And in their combination – a wonderful illustration of the two poles of human life.

...it is possible to hear here such unusual things, for example, as sounding of cows’ bells ringing – and do not be surprised when you hear real music in that. It is there indeed – though not as obvious as in the joint singing of fuyarka and forest birds, or in the dialog of human singing and cows’ bells, to say nothing about ancient Huzul melodies.

It is known that the name "Petrovychy" is not for nothing but because Petro is still the father of the majority of its participants. It is known that they are not ashamed at all to play under open-skies – that is why central streets of Ivano-Frankivsk accepted them long ago. As they play not just well, but even very well – they have already had time to become a real decoration and pride of the city.

...on the disc, we hear real, authentic kolomyikas with accompaniment of real, masterful musicians. Certainly, it could not do without humor and transparent hints. But, as these are texts dozens or even hundreds of years old sounding, – they have that tolerance, even original chastity.

Meet – the authentic folklore ensemble from Verhniy Bukovets village of Ivano-Frankivsk region, the Tafiychuks family group. "Melodies of the Carpathians" is the first album by the ensemble. However, you would not call these people novices – the surname of the Tafiychuks is well known, at least, to those few thousand people who have at least once visited Sheshory ethnic festival.

Про Могура. Казали шо у него скрыпка сама йграла. Я тогди ще був малим, хоча памятаю коли по Верховинi по набуткам або весiллям йграв Могур. Ходили тогди слухi шо вiн мав у собi особу, не людску силу в музицi.
