No music instrument is able to surpass the force of expressiveness of the human voice – or almost unable. At least, it is with voice that they compare sounding of an instrument – when it sounds so beautiful and live that it seems to be a miracle. The cases when a violin cries, a flute sings, a French horn whispers are exactly from this series. And if the voice is the standard of expressiveness – there is also music in which it shows up most brightly. Naturally, this is the music in which voice appears as the only instrument – that is a capella music. Lately, variety and jazz variants of such collectives have become very popular, but, speaking largely, folk songs were initially always performed a capella. Some other instruments could be used afterwards, but at first there always was – just voice. Later this tradition was continued and developed by spiritual music – and only at appearance of jazz such singing made its way to the wide, popular scene. But let’s go back to the start, to folk music – as it is exactly Ukrainian folk songs that have been collected on this disk. This time the performance is not authentic – you will hear songs performed by serious professionals (some of them, as the State Honored Academic Folk Choir named after G.Veryovka, are professionals with the world-known name). You will hear it – and, I am sure, will not for the first time thank in your heart compilers of the "Gold Collection" series, their patience and taste. The ability to select from the whole enormous volume of funds of the National Radio Company of Ukraine such high-quality material, to arrange all that correctly is a great thing to do, tedious work. But the result is also – of the highest quality.

Personally with me these melodies arouse certain associations – the time spent in the city park of culture and rest. At any time of the year, since this music was performed there practically always, and it practically always blended harmoniously with a city microclimate.

In this particular case the matter concerns classical performance of Ukrainian folk songs and arias from famous Ukrainian operas. On the other hand, the compositions presented here are so famous, that one can start familiarizing oneself with opera singing exactly with this disc...

Personally for me this music draws such a picture – summertime, a park, children with ice cream and balloons in their hands, parents walking leisurely, unexpected meetings with old acquaintances and a lot of smiles.

Compilers of the "Golden Collection" do an extraordinarily important thing – they remind partially forgotten names, illuminate creation by famous people from some new sides. Due to such releases, it becomes obvious that riches of Ukrainian music are – practically inexhaustible. Thank you.

If you look from one side – well, what can be positive about drinking? Both time, and money disappear to nowhere – and then, suddenly, the whole life might disappear somewhere... And from the other side – you should really know nothing about drinking to make your life worse.

This is an outstanding collection of choral masterpieces, with well-known songs about love (mostly unrequited), moonlit rendezvous, romantic trees of all kinds, horses, and flowers (a girl's unplaited braid is also mentioned more than once). What is remarkable is that the recordings---mostly from the 1970s and '80s---have such superb sound quality. The arrangements are all our classical standards, with the notable exception of #17, whose harmonic slides by Avdiievsky blew my mind. But above all, the performances are so exquisite, so sincere and sensitive, that some of today's over-hyped superstars (especially the Kyiv Chamber Choir) seem immodest and histrionic in comparison.
