M. Lysenko composed his best stage work – the music drama "Taras Bulba" – based on the plot of the famous same-name story by M. Gogol (libretto by M. Starytsky). The composer attributed a lot of importance to this masterpiece because in the work over it that lasted for a whole decade (1880-1890) he revealed his special artistic demand and civil responsibility. "Taras Bulba" by M. Lysenko is the peak of Ukrainian classic opera inheritance. The work reflects all of its best features – deep, penetrating folk character, loyalty to the best national artistic traditions. M. Lysenko long struggled for performance of "Taras Bulba" on the professional scene. However, during the composer's lifetime this never happened. The prominent work of Ukrainian music classics was first staged in 1924 in Kharkiv.
