If you look into the eyes of the sky – it is possible to feel its look at yourself. If you listen to the voice of grass – it is possible to grow together with it. If you touch air with your lips – it is possible to breathe even beyond the body. And if you breathe in beams of the sun and the moon – it is possible to tell the stories that eyes do not see. But the heart – recognizes... Probably, there is not that much music in the world, about which the first and the last word can be – harmony. Not an ideal combination of parts within the general construction but – harmony just as the essence of every instant of the sound and silence, being and perception. And these instants by themselves create the infinite space of quiet beauty – because what an instant is? As it was once said – the Universe in a grain of sand... Anton Jozhik Lejba (Hedgehog)
Actually, this is what Valentyn Sylvestrov himself says about "Fleeting Melodies": "...a large cycle, comprised of seven works, which are performed without interruption – as one large text. For me in this work, there is a certain analogy with Bach's cycle "The Art of the Fugue"; in Bach's work the didactic idea and its application are primary. I could have called this cycle "The Art of the Melody", but in this name the didactic idea is missing and only the "art" is represented; thus "fleeting melodies" – the expanse, in which melodies exist on the boundary between their appearance and disappearance..."

Just incredible music – simple and wonderful at the same time.. And simple not because it does not contain delicate nuances, but because it succeeds, having rounded all sophistications of intellectual perception, to slightly open the door – right into the heart.. The multidimensional character of real Names – this is what you remember when listening to this disc.

...this disc even became the first (!) recording of sonatas by Myroslav Skoryk. Moreover: even the very music sheets of Sonata No.2 were not yet published at that moment. And Sonata No.1, by the way, is one of his diploma pieces in the domain of chamber music with which he in his time defended his degree after post-graduate studies in Moscow. Thus, this release can be justly referred to as really exclusive one..

Romuald Twardowski composes in 2006 "Kyivska" Liturgy – and dedicates it exactly to the chamber choir "Kyiv". Such honor and attention could not remain without an answer – consequently, as it could be expected, the choir became the performer of the Liturgy... This is, sure, a good record – transparently soft and strong at the same time.

It seems to me that it is just impossible to pass by that rest, internal force and freedom that sound in his works. Confidently – but not boldly, nobly – but without boasting, posturing. Music by Sylvestrov practically always causes the feeling as though he stands in front of the face of eternity with his head uncovered but raised – and you, the listener, at these moments stand next to him...

It is quite enough to just listen attentively to any pieces by Stankovych, from chamber to symphonic ones – and there are no longer any doubts: this man enriched not a nation – but humanity – with his creativity. The feeling is absolutely clear – the spaces that live in music by Stankovych breathe real grandeur.

When the author perceives interpretation of his/her own works as an accomplished one – it does testify to something. And Valentyn Silvestrov referred to the interpretation by the ensemble "Kyiv Soloists" exactly in those terms. From now on, you also have the opportunity to listen to this concert, to hear, feel, perceive, penetrate into it...

His "Meditation" is a symphony for a violoncello and a chamber orchestra. Meditation in a general sense is a state, a process and quality at the same time. Since a symphony is called to reproduce and to recreate the first, the second and the third, it is hopeless to reproduce the content. This music...

I can't really put into words what the music of Fleeting Melodies means to me. I got in touch with it about a year ago and all the music I compose is now under the influence of it. The smooth quality of it, the slightest touch of such beauty and the ability to achieve it is of such rarity that this is something to treasure. It's one of those moments that you have to quiet yourself and pay attention just because there's so much into these humble sounds, these fragile and beauty structures, that anything you'll do is enough to disrupt them. You need a lot of respect for music to listen to these pieces and that's what I'd recommend to someone who doesn't know Silvestrov's music. Just let it breathe and surround you.
I was the happy buyer of the last copy available. It was a gift (I know, I know, how could I not keep it...), but I know it will be very well kept.

The performers on this disc – Bohdana Pivnenko (violin) and Valeriy Matiukhin (piano) – show both their love and understanding of Valentin Silvestrov’s work. His interpretative instruction, which they execute brilliantly throughout the album, ‘While listening, this music must sound light and clear, distant…’, could apply to just about all of his late work – it settles on the ear of the listener like a mist that is barely there, a whisper from another place, another time…delicate, but not to be ignored. More than any other contemporary composer whose work I’ve experienced, Silvestrov’s music sings – with or without a vocal component. The beauty in these pieces carries meaning and emotion felt on the deepest level, wrapped in music that appeals to both the heart and intellect. Pivnenko and Matiukhin weave their lines in and out of each other, rapt in their interpretation and at the same time sensitive to the voicings offered by their partner – there is not a single failed nuance or overplayed line. It’s like listening to liquid flowing – the recording’s generous 72 minute length is over before one expects it to be, and repeated listenings follow as naturally as one breath follows the next.
I highly recommend this stunning recording, as well as the service I received from UMKA...first-rate.
