There exist Tibetan monks in this world who travel, relate, show – and perform their Tibetan music. By any chance, have you ever heard them performing? If you have, probably you will be surprised with this recording, since the distance between the Tibet and the Carpathian Mountains is so big, but still the music of these regions has something in common, even something allied. The question is – where from? Yet, on the other hand, both are mountains, and it means that they are closer to the sky. As you know, in the sky the roots grow and communicate according to their own laws, which are not at all earthly. That is why all that is not surprising. Quite different things should be surprising – why people can seldom find a common language. Immediately one of the answers appears – since when you communicate with the help of words, practically always there is something fallacious and incomplete present in this communication. It happens because every person has his or her personal thesaurus in his or her head. And one of the decisions may be heard right now – because music is nearly the most universal language among all human and non-human languages. This is not even a theorem; it is simply a fact, and frankly speaking, a joyful fact. Its joy lies not in the hope for a possible harmonious communication, but in the fact that this communication exists now and keeps on existing. You should only see it. Or, to be exact, to hear. To feel.

It is a real wandering through colourful villages. Genuine meetings and acquaintances not only with music, but also with people, through whom it does not simply flow, but beams, warms and open. There are so many things in this music and in this singing, which we forget, living in our cities, working, sitting in front of screens, that you even lack words to express your feelings. This music and this singing are full of philanthropy, transparency and the sun.

The so-called Romanian origin of "hutsul" is just one possible, but very unlikely explanation, If the Ukrainian hutsuls were so Romanian they would be all speaking Romanian language and be Roman Catholic - which has never been the case. There is certainly some influence from Romania, but only in the Bukovina region, in things like ethnic dress and colors, but it would be ridiculous for a Romanian person to imply that hutuls came from Romania! Hutsul name has also a very and only really possible origin in Ukrainian and Slavic culture not in Romanian. I want to remind our Romanian "expert" that it is not "hutsul" but "gutsul" the way it is written. So, was if it came from Romanian, Ukrainian word would have been written with an "h" and not "g". I would also like to remind our friend, that even today, there are numerous villages in Romania, where people still speak the hutsul Ukrainian dialect. Why? Because those territories once belonged to Slavic speakers, and during the 20th century became part of Romania through occupation. Romania is a wonderful country and Romanians are wonderful people, but they have nothing to do with the Ukrainian hutsuls. The Romanian friend does not even say if he enjoyed the hutsul CD. Cheers!

The name Hutsul comes from the Romanian noun Hots, which means outlow, or Haidouk. Mihail Eminescu, one of the great estern-european romantics, said that the hutsuls are dacians which addopted a slavic dialect, and Miklosch, a world-faimous specialist in ethnography, told that the hutsuls have a evident Romanian character in all their culture. The music from kosmaki, the romanian dances like Arkan, Kolomeika, the Doinas are as Romanian as the music from the village near Bucharest, with the same Tambal, and the same melodic lines, and that of Maramures, the ''Toscany'' of the Romanian literary language, as Nicolae Iorga said. I think the Kosmaki musicians should come to Romania, to give concerts, because there music is one of the oldest and purest forms of romanian music that exist, as pure as the folklore of Valachia, near the Danube.

This is a wonderful CD of traditional Hutsul music performed by a group of truly outstanding musicians. The instrumental solos and duets are particularly beautiful and interesting. It's nice to have the notes in English as well as Ukrainian. Overall a great CD !
