So then, here is the second disc of music, songs and dances (pay attention to the video) of Ukrainian Greeks. “Sartanski Samotsvety” is a Greek folk ensemble, the members of which come from Ukraine, from the village of Sartany in Mariupol region. The brochure added to the disc tells much about the ensemble itself and the Greeks who live on the territory of Ukraine in general – you will have the chance to read everything by yourselves. This year “Sartanski Samotsvety” will be 70, and it is considered to be the leading Greek ensemble in Azov region. That’s the very reason why it is known not only at home, but also in Russia, Georgia, Greece and Cyprus. Now we know it as well, and all that is quite astonishing. At least, it is astonishing personally for me. That is, I know that Ukraine is a multi-national country, but it has somehow never occurred to me that our folk songs and melodies (after all, Azov Greeks are a part of our nation) may sound in such a way as well. At the same time, all that is not only unusual and interesting, but it is nice – and this is the main thing about it. A person who is not indifferent to folk art should not disregard this disc - irrespective of the folk art the ensemble gives preference to.

Izzet Abliazov makes something special – that’s for sure. On the first album he was singing his own songs, on the second one – he already used rhythm reggae for Tatar folklore – and it sounded cool. This time – Izzet easily and beautiful interweaves reggae with Crimean Gypsy folk.

...the album at once creates elated, festive mood – but in a surprising way. In the correct way. Because, although about a half of the compositions can hardly be called merry ones – a smile is very expressly felt in them. Somewhere dim, somewhere transparent, somewhere dreamy, somewhere thoughtful – but it is present in each piece, and it warms.

Far not every musician is able to breathe in real life into age-old instruments, to let them sound brightly, deeply – not with glass strasses, but with jewels. Olexa Kabanov, no doubt, is. In his performance traditional melodies sound as if they did not have hundreds of years behind their back – to that extent they are live, close, and warm.

In the world, certainly, there are quite a lot of people who play Celtic music – and even more say that they play it. But not everyone is able, having taken a correct basis, to correctly invest his or her own breathing into it – so that the harmony really came to life. Rune – you will hear that yourself – taught their music not simply breathing...

You will come across Christmas carols of France, England, Wales, Sweden, Austria, the USA, Spain, Germany here – honestly speaking, the very list inspires respect. Moreover, all the songs are performed in original languages – and this is, you should agree, a piece of work. And it was worth it...

The name of a disc speaks for itself. Here are hopak, sirtaki, lezginka, hava-nagila. Executed on a synthesiser, these melodies are intended rather not for domestic listening, but for use at lessons of dances, or in the dramatised performances or concerts at school or kindergarten.

It seems that every musician who follows the way of self-perfection early or late faces the music culture of the East – and gets penetrated with it. In the end, it is difficult to stay indifferent to this beauty. Thus, the only thing left is to let it in, let it through and – let it go. Evidently, Olexa succeeded in it – you will hear that yourself.

Two new publications with music of the Azov Greeks, almost 20 years after the legendary publications by Alexandr Ashla (which are commemorated in the rubric “Old but still new”). 20 years, and incredible changes have swept the region, thousants of greek-originating people have migrate from the northern coast of the Black Sea to Greece and, the borders being open, the cultural as well as the financial exchanges, are everyday practice. What has been changed, what is still as it was? Sartanski Samotsvity, the “Gems of Sartana” interprete songs in the regional greek language which, while borrowing Slavic and Turkic words, keeps its Greek torso to an extend comprehensible by the (Greek) listener. It keeps also many elements of the Greek musical tradition –modes, rhythms etc– although, as it comes through a system of formal education, has a kind of contemporary Bulgarian hint. Bir Taifa, the “One family” are a nice surprice as, in spite of their Greek origin, are Turkic speaking and their sound is closer to the Krym Tatars. It’s uncertain to which extend these albums depict an ancient tradition; along with the ancient elements, one can find in them strong marks of the last tumultuous years, of the burden of living in a foreing land and of the practice of cultural loans. Recapitalizing all the above, here comes the song In my own hut by Giorgos Mitsakis, which closes the album of Sartanski Samotsnity, putting the question what ends the old and where starts the new, where ends imitation and where does originality starts – exactly there, where nobody expects it.
